CO-EDITOR JOINS NEWSLETTER

“My name is Dan and I am an alcoholic.
I came to AA on Oct. 26, 1979, through the U.S. Navy alcohol rehab center in San Diego, Calif. My first home group was the
Just For Today Group in Yokosuka, Japan, in 1980 and1981. I spent my first two years in recovery on a U.S. Navy destroyer
in the Western Pacific, attending meetings in Guam, Korea, Japan, the Philippines and Hawaii.
I’ve attended meetings from Seattle
to Mexico to Brazil to Ottawa, and most places in between.
I grew up in Niagara Falls during the
late 1950s and ‘60s, and left in 1972 when I joined the Navy.
I moved back to the Falls 2-1/2 years
ago to help take care of my mother.
My present home group is the Sunday
morning Attitude Adjustments Group at the First Step Center in Niagara Falls and the Big Book Step Group on weekday mornings.
I’ve been involved in pretty much
every area of service work since I got sober, from starting fellowships to making coffee.
I’ve never not been a part of
a Big Book or Step study group since I got sober because that’s where the directions – not suggestions –
are located.
My first sponsor was a man named Mike
Edmonds, whose sponsor was a man named Ollie Olsen, who’s first sponsor was Dr. Bob. So I was brought up in the program
with some very old-school AA.
I’ve seen a lot of changes in
AA/recovery over the years, but the basic core of recovery has remained the same – trust God, clean house, and work
with others.
I hope to share whatever experience,
strength and hope I can share with the AA community in this region.
I have relocated twice in recovery and it’s never an easy process. I have learned over the years
that no matter where I go on this planet, I’ve always managed to find an AA home.”
